Yes, I can help! And no, they will probably not be using words to tell me all about their problems—and that’s ok! A child’s prefrontal cortex is not developed enough to fully engage with or benefit from traditional talk therapy. The brilliance of play therapy, however, is that no words are necessary. Everything the child feels and believes comes forward through play. All play is communication, and toys are the child’s words.
In session, I support your child’s emotional processing through specific, developmentally appropriate therapeutic skills.
-
Unless your child discloses abuse or risk of harm to self or others, I hold in confidentiality what your child shares in session. The purpose of confidentiality is to preserve trust in the therapeutic alliance.
While I will never share specific details from sessions with you in parent consultation, I will discuss overall themes and progress in therapy.
I hold your trust and your child’s trust in the highest regard, and I will always act in the best interests of your child.

It’s very normal to wonder if therapy is working. In play therapy, progress often begins with subtle internal changes—such as increased emotional awareness, regulation, or confidence—before noticeable changes show up at home or school.
As always, I will partner with you and communicate regarding any progress I observe.
If you feel that this therapeutic approach is not a good fit for your child, I respect your decision. I am happy to assist with referrals or resources to help you identify a provider or approach that feels like the best fit for your family.
